21 Things You Don't Know About Emma Stone

Check out 21 fun facts about one of Hollywood's hottest redheads (who's naturally a blonde!).
Let's Talk Emma
Emma Stone is one of Hollywood's hottest rising stars. She's dating Spider-Man, has kissed Ryan Gosling almost as many times as Eva Mendes (probably), and has the uncanny ability to pull off any hair color. Check out more fun facts about this gorgeous star ahead.

1. Her Real Name Isn't Emma
Emma Stone was born Emily Jean Stone. She changed her name while registering for her Screen Actors Guild card and found "Emily Stone" was taken. Some people still call her "Emily," which must be thoroughly confusing for everyone. "Jean" was her grandmother's first name.

2. She's a High School Dropout
The star attended Xavier College Preparatory, a Catholic high school in Phoenix, for one semester before dropping out to pursue her acting dreams. She was home schooled after that.

3. She Got Her Big Break on a VH1 Reality Show
Emma Stone got her big break back when reality TV was just heating up. She won the role of Laurie Partridge in 2004 on VH1's In Search of the New Partridge Family! Unfortunately, the show tanked (they only produced one episode), but she did land some minor TV guest spots following the failed gig. She landed her first recurring role on TV's Drive in 2007.

4. She Really Broke Both Arms
Emma Stone was in bad shape at the age of seven when she broke both arms on the parallel bars in gymnastics. Years later, the actress starred in the "I Broke My Arm" skit on Saturday Night Live. She did break both arms in the sketch, along with both of her legs and just about everything else.

5. She's Not a Natural Redhead
Although the big screen beauty is best known for her copper locks, they're not natural! Her real hair color is blond. However, she landed her first TV role after dying her hair dark brown.

6. Judd Apatow Made Her Dye Her Hair Red
We all have famed film producer Judd Apatow to thank for Stone's now-signature red hair. He was the one who convinced her to ditch her brunette locks back in 2007 for her role in Superbad. "Judd made me a redhead," she explained in 2010. “I was a brunette during casting. Then Judd walked in, said 'Make it red,’ and walked out. So he made me this way.”

7. There's a Reason She Has a Low-Pitched Voice
Along with her red hair, the actress is known for her husky, low-pitched voice. She joked that it's because she smoked when she was four, but really it comes from having colic as a baby. "My mom dealt with a screaming baby 24 hours a day for the first six months of my life – I screamed myself hoarse every day and developed nodules as an infant," she revealed. "So I have calluses on my vocal cords, which makes me lose my voice all the time and makes doing something like screaming in a scene, over and over, really rough, because then I lose my voice for, like, a week."

8. She's Scared of Spiders, Needles, and Being Picked Up
Emma Stone is fine with battling zombies on the big screen, but don't get her near needles or spiders, or fling her over your head. Ever. She told Jay Leno: "I have two phobias: one of being lifted over somebody's head, which was the issue with Crazy, Stupid, Love., and the other phobia is getting my blood drawn. Needles." She was also scared to death when Ellen DeGeneres brought out fake spiders during an interview.

9. She Got Her Ears Pierced at 21
The actress waited 21 long years before getting her ears pierced. In one shot she got two holes in her left earlobe and three in her right. "Most people go through this when they’re like, 14," she revealed. "I’m like, ‘Hey, what’s up everybody? I moved to New York and got fiive piercings!”

10. She Had Her First Asthma Attack While Filming a Fake Sex Scene
Talk about embarrassing: This star found out she had asthma while filming a rigorous fake sex scene in 2010's Easy A. Stone explained: "I had a little asthma attack, without any prior knowledge that I had asthma, during the scene where we had to jump up and down for hours and hours screaming and yelling on the bed. [It] was humiliating, because it was the second day of shooting."

11. She's Very Persuasive
Stone grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona, and convinced her parents to up and move her to L.A. using a PowerPoint presentation set to Madonna's song "Hollywood." Apparently she was pretty convincing. In January 2004 she dropped out of her all-girls school and moved with her mom to Tinseltown.

12. She's Hit "Rock Bottom"
These days, the bubbly redhead has no problem scoring roles. A few years back, it was a different story. She lost out on the role of Claire Bennet in Heroes back in 2007 (to Hayden Panettiere) and says the experience was "rock bottom." Luckily, she landed her first movie role the same year.

13. She Has Many Musical Talents
Stone has run from zombies, played a ghost, and learned how to play the bass for her movies over the years. She honed her musical talents for The Rocker in 2008. That year she also starred in The House Bunny and sang the single from the film, a cover of "I Know What Boys Like."

14. She's Played an Australian Shepherd
Just before landing her first lead role in Easy A, Stone played an Australian shepherd on the big screen. She was the voice of the dog Mazie in the film adaptation of the comic strip Marmaduke, which follows a Great Dane and his pals.

15. Her Career Dream Has Come True -- Twice
Emma Stone said she got into acting to fulfill her lifelong dream of hosting Saturday Night Live. Well, she can retire now that she's had the honor twice! The star, who did improv with a local theater group as a kid, hosted the sketch comedy show on October 23, 2010, and again on November 12, 2011. She's now trying to convince Ryan Gosling to do it.

16. She's Fallen in Love with Ryan Gosling -- Twice
Ladies everywhere envy Emma Stone's onscreen love affair with Ryan Gosling. The two appeared together in 2011's Crazy, Stupid, Love and their next flick, Gangster Squad, is due out next year. This all means the actress has probably kissed the Gos almost as much as his own girlfriend, Eva Mendes. While we'd sure like to know what it's like to smooch the dreamy actor, Stone won't kiss and tell.

17. She Met Her Boyfriend on the Job
The real object of Emma's affection is her Amazing Spider-Man co-star Andrew Garfield. The pair stepped out together in early January and have been going strong since. One of their favorite pastimes is strolling the streets of NYC with coffee and cute hats.

18. She's BFFs with Taylor Swift
Emma Stone is one of the hottest young actors around, so it's not too surprising that she's befriended one of the hottest young singers around. She talked about her friendship with Taylor Swift in 2011. "We met at the Young Hollywood Awards for Hollywood Life magazine," she explained. "We met there three years ago, and then I listened to some of her music, and I wrote her an e-mail saying I liked her music, I swear. And then we started talking and hanging out."

19. Jonah Hill is One of Her Favorite People
Jonah Hill helped make Stone a star in Superbad, and they've been close ever since. She had to pass up starring with him again in the 21 Jump Street remake this year, but it wasn't personal. At the time, she said the actor's one of her favorite people "in the entire world."

20. She's a Crier
While the actress has been crowned Hot & Funny, she's also very emotional. Stone won the Trailblazer award at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards and got surprisingly choked up during her acceptance speech. “Thank you, I’m a crier,” she said. “So, I looked up the actual definition of trailblazer, and it means someone who blazes a trail to be followed by others. And that’s an honor to hear you’re being associated with a concept like that.”

21. Bill Murray is One of Her Idols
We don't expect Emma Stone to wear 15 kinds of plaid to her next big Hollywood event, but she does idolize actor Bill Murray. She says she's also inspired by Gilda Radner, John Candy, Charlie Chaplin, the Beatles, Lorne Michaels, Cameron Crowe and the Beatles.
